LBK No.9 in Conde Nast

Conde Naste BlogLongboat Key was the No. 9 best island in the U.S. in Conde Nast Traveler’s 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Overall Rating: 79.985

This barrier island is the most private of the famed keys alongside Sarasota, which include Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key. Seashell enthusiasts will find a perfect vacation spot on the key, where sand dollars are plentiful just offshore.

Pro tip: The beach is a glorious 10-miles long, but most access is limited to guests staying in resorts on the key. For the full experience, be sure to stay at a hotel along the Gulf.

Getting there: The key is just a 30-minute drive northwest from downtown Sarasota.

Dream town: Sarasota

Coastal Living Dream TownBeaches – It’s a quick and scenic drive (and a popular running and walking route) across the Ringling Bridge to Lido Key, part of the city and home to three beautiful public beaches. Lido Beach (pictured here), a 3,000-foot strand of powdery white sand, has lifeguards and such conveniences as concessions, restrooms, and a pool. Undeveloped North Lido Beach, with its quiet, bleached sands and grassy dunes, is home to local and migrating shorebirds. South Lido Beach is part of a 100-acre property that touches four bodies of water: Sarasota Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, Big Pass, and Brushy Bayou. Just 15 minutes from downtown lies Siesta Key, with its shallow waters and epic expanse of bone-white, 99-percent-quartz sand, which stays cool even on the hottest sunny day.

Sarasota – Top 10 Best Places to Retire

Sarasota - Best Place to Retire
Sarasota – Best Place to Retire

Before it became one of the most popular places to retire, Sarasota, Fla., served as the winter quarters of the Greatest Show on Earth, the Ringling Brothers Circus. Today retirees enjoy a lion’s share of activities and things to do along with plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. What makes Sarasota one of the greatest cities to retire in are the low costs of living, especially when it comes to health care, the high volume of golf courses and parks, and the large segment of people age 60 and older.
